Why These Hormones Matter During Menopause 

Hey, gorgeous! 

Let’s dive deep into something we don’t talk about enough: the importance of our hormones. Specifically, the dynamic trio that plays a huge role in our health, energy, and how we navigate through menopause—oestradiol, progesterone, and testosterone. Yep, you read that right: testosterone isn’t just for the boys!  (When I was prescribed this at the beginning of my treatment as part of my hormone package, I honestly thought my voice would drop and I’d wake up resembling a chimpanzee!!! I had a lot to learn!).  

These hormones are the real leading ladies when it comes to everything from mood swings to muscle tone, and they’re especially crucial during menopause. So, grab your cup of tea, coffee, or wine (no judgment here), and let’s break it down. 

Oestradiol: Your Body’s Best Friend 

First up is oestradiol, the queen bee of oestrogen. This hormone is responsible for making you feel like the radiant, glowing goddess you are. It’s what keeps your skin plump, your bones strong, and your mood balanced. Oestradiol plays a huge role in sexual health, memory, and even how we manage stress. 

But here’s the kicker: when menopause hits, oestradiol levels start to drop. And that’s when we notice those infamous symptoms—hot flushes, brain fog, irritability, and yes, even changes in libido. 

Does this mean you’re doomed to suffer? Absolutely not! It just means your body is shifting gears, and you can give it what it needs through lifestyle tweaks, support, or, for some, hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Oestradiol can make a world of difference when you’re feeling off-balance, and that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Think of it as giving your body a little nudge back into equilibrium. 

Progesterone: The Soothing Sista 

Next, we have progesterone, which is like the calming bestie we all need during a meltdown. It’s the hormone that balances out oestradiol’s fiery energy and helps keep things smooth. Progesterone is a natural anti-anxiety agent (yep, your body makes its own chill pill!) and promotes deep, restful sleep. 

During the menopause transition, progesterone levels can plummet, leading to sleepless nights, mood swings, and even more anxiety than we’re already dealing with. It’s the reason why some women feel like they’re losing control of their emotions. But trust me—you’re not going mad (even if it feels that way). It’s just that your body’s natural balance is shifting, and with the right approach, you can bring it back in line. 

Whether it’s natural progesterone supplements, HRT, or even just better self-care, we’ve got options. And the best part? Once you get that progesterone flowing again, you’ll feel more zen than a Sunday morning yoga class. 

Testosterone: The Unsung Heroine 

And now, the big surprise—testosterone! Yes, ladies, we have testosterone too, and it’s not just for bulking up at the gym. For women, testosterone is all about energy, libido, and muscle tone. It’s what gives us that drive to get up, get out, and tackle the day. It also plays a big role in keeping our bones strong and our metabolism humming. 

As we head into menopause, our testosterone levels start to drop right alongside oestradiol and progesterone. And guess what? That’s why you might feel more tired, less motivated, and wonder where your sex drive disappeared to. But, no need to panic! Low testosterone doesn’t have to mean low quality of life. 

Just like with the other hormones, there are ways to support your testosterone levels – whether through lifestyle changes, supplements, or (for some) hormone therapy. 

The Hormonal Balancing Act 

So, what does all this mean? These hormones – oestradiol, progesterone, and testosterone – are working behind the scenes to keep you feeling your best. When they’re balanced, you’re on fire, unstoppable, and thriving. When they dip or shift during menopause, it’s not the end of the world – it’s just your body signaling that it needs a little more love and attention. 

The goal here isn’t to fear this change but to understand it. Our hormones don’t define us, but they sure do play a major role in how we feel. And the more we know about them, the more empowered we are to take control of our own health and well-being.
